Costa Yiannoulis

Managing Partner

Co-Founder

Costa is energised by helping food tech founders build their businesses and realise their unique visions. His background combines investment banking, management consulting and venture capital, in top tier firms. It is this broad experience that he brings to support founders across all stages, to take their businesses to the next level.

Costa’s motivation to build a sustainable food system was inspired by the birth of his first child in 2016, and the understanding of the urgent need to work on a healthier planet for his children and the next generation after that.

Previously, as the Investment Director at CPT Capital, Costa led the building and management of their 35-strong food tech portfolio, working alongside founders in the trenches through ups and downs. He has been an active board member of several front runners in the alternative protein space across technology verticals: Plantbased (Redefine Meat and Gathered Foods/Good Catch); Fermentation (Geltor, Legendairy Foods/Formo, and Enough/3FBio); and Cultivated (BlueNalu).

Costa holds a BA and MA in Economics from Cambridge University and an MBA from INSEAD.

Rosie Wardle

Partner

Co-Founder

With a life-long interest in food systems and sustainability, Rosie was early to understand the relevance of ESG, and to apply its principles, to the food sector. As Programme Director of the Coller Foundation, she helped launch FAIRR, an investor network which is now supported by over $40trillion of combined institutional investor assets. Through FAIRR she worked with the key stakeholders across the food sector, from the biggest investors to largest corporates across the value chain, to formulate their ESG strategies.

Understanding the challenges that industry incumbents faced led Rosie to recognise the opportunity for investment in solutions to these challenges. From writing an initial 2-page investment memo on a then-tiny company called Savage River (now Beyond Meat) in 2013, to leading Geltor’s $100M Series B round in 2020 – Rosie has been central to the development of the alt protein space and to the building and management of the CPT Capital portfolio. She also acts as an advisor to several high-profile NGO and governmental initiatives in the alternative protein space, including XPRIZE Feed the Next Billion.

Rosie holds a BA and MA in Modern Languages and Linguistics from the University of Oxford, and an MA from the Courtauld Institute.

Dr. David Welch

Chief Scientific Officer

Co-Founder

David believes technology is central to how we solve our biggest global challenges, and he’s driven by a desire to help companies bring breakthrough technologies to market that create a better food system. At Synthesis, David combines his academic and commercial experience in plant biology, cell therapy, and alternative protein technology, to identify and support exceptional technology-focused future food start-ups.

David spent the first 15 years of his career in commercial roles within the life science industry, including at Thermo Fisher Scientific and 3M Healthcare, bringing many successful products to market including cell technologies and media, scaffolds, and immunoassays. Driven by an interest in solving the inefficiencies of our food system, David joined The Good Food Institute (GFI) as their first Director of Science and Technology, leading the development of GFI’s technology strategy and establishing their world-leading scientific team.

David holds a B.Sc. in biology from the University of California at Berkeley and a Ph.D. in plant developmental cell biology from Utrecht University.

Simon Bliss

Chief Financial & Operating Officer

Simon is responsible for the overall management of the finance, administration and day to day operations of Synthesis.

He brings a wealth of experience to the team having been in senior finance and administration positions within private equity firms since 1997, which has included creating and managing back and middle office operations, recruiting and building out teams, and fundraising. 

Simon was captivated by the passion and enthusiasm of the founders and their vision to build a sustainable food system. He also saw the opportunity to bring his finance and operational skillsets to Synthesis, and through his stewardship of the back and middle offices, provides invaluable support to the founders and the investment team. 

Simon is a CIMA qualified accountant.
