Synthesis Capital is seeking a motivated, dedicated individual who will apply their deep knowledge of the technology used in the alternative protein industry to identify and support the best and most promising start-ups transforming the food system. The science and technology used within the alternative protein industry is broad and complex, spanning crop engineering, machine learning, bioprocess engineering, stem cell biology, and other diverse technical fields. To supplement and enhance the expertise within the Synthesis Capital team, this role will require experience in fermentation and bioprocess engineering.

As a team member of the leading investment manager focused on alternative proteins, the successful candidate will play a crucial role in expanding Synthesis Capital’s access to innovative research and companies in new emerging technology areas, assessing the technical merits and differentiators of companies, supporting the investment team in due diligence processes, and managing the portfolio from a technological perspective.

This role will report directly to the Chief Scientific Officer at Synthesis Capital.

Key Responsibilities:

Investment Diligence and Portfolio Management:

  • Support the investment team by performing initial scientific assessments of companies
  • In close partnership with Synthesis Capital’s CSO and the investment team, support and drive scientific and technical due diligence on new investments
  • Support Synthesis Capital portfolio companies with relevant science and technology expertise

Technology Strategy:

  • Perform desktop research and analysis on new technology areas
  • Keep abreast of the latest technological developments within relevant fields
  • Provide subject matter expertise to the investment and research teams
  • Write white papers and blog posts, as needed

Deal Sourcing and Network Building:

  • Source potential deals and interesting technologies through science and technology scouting with leading academic institutes, incubators, accelerators, and other organisations

Applicant Requirements:

  • A Masters in a relevant scientific field and a minimum of two years of industry experience in a technical-commercial role, preferably in fermentation, chemical engineering, and/or bioprocess engineering
  • A functional understanding of the principles, technology, and techniques used in the alternative protein industry, including familiarity with scale-up and commercial translation. Expertise in microbial fermentation and bioprocess technologies is preferred
  • Experience translating scientific information into formats for non-scientific professionals
  • Detail-oriented, proactive and self-motivated
  • Commercial acumen, global approach, excellent communication and presentation abilities, including strong active listening skills
  • A team player focused on results and driving proactive solutions with the ability to multi-task, prioritize projects and lead cross-functional initiatives
  • Interest in the future of food and alternative proteins; motivation for building a long-term career in the sector
  • London based (preferred). Open to exceptional candidates based in the United States or Europe
